Open Letter to Nancy Pelosi
Dear Ms. Pelosi,
My wife and I celebrated your being the first woman Speaker of the House. It appeared that justice had a chance to return to Washington. But when you promised not to pursue impeachment against George W Bush*, we had to wonder what you could possibly be thinking.
If lying us into war is not an impeachable offense, and if it is not the job of Congress to protect Americans from such offenses, then what good is the law to impeach anyway? If Bush is not impeached, we will send a message to future presidents that there is no law they cannot break, no offense horrible enough to threaten them with the prospect of facing justice.
If you are not going to impeach Bush, then remove the articles of impeachment from the constitution entirely. But don't expect support for any Democratic agenda in '08, because we feel used and cheated on the left. If not for our "get out the vote" efforts from the left, you would still be in the minority. I realize we (the left) only represent about 15% of the vote. Try building a majority party minus that.

You warned us? If what Bush has done is not impeachable, then my question to you is ... What would justify impeachment?
I spent November 8th celebrating because I believed that the day had come when the Democrats we supported would exercise their constitutional responsibility to provide oversight to the executive branch. Now it appears that we are going to get business as usual. A party who operates out of political expedience while ignoring the very things and people that put them in office.
Please, please explain to me why not impeaching George Bush will accomplish anything other than granting carte blanch to future presidents who decide their power is greater than the system that is supposed to protect us from their abuse?

PS - I am doing a series of articles at vote4change.net on the need for impeachment and the Democrats resistance in doing so. I would appreciate a response. If you don't respond it will be the same treatment we were given by the GOP. That would be a sad thing considering the middle class and their concerns have been ignored for six years under GOP dominance. I promise to treat your explanation with respect and serious consideration for the decision you have made. If you don't respond, I will make a point of publishing that fact.
