Impeachment
Jon London
My good friend and owner of this Blog, Kevin Morgan, feels a need to impeach President Bush. You may have noticed an article in this wonderful electronic communications that Mr. Morgan wrote a letter to soon to be Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. In that letter Mr. Morgan points out that President Bush has lied to the citizens of this country and has gotten us into a war under false pretenses. Mr. Morgan believes the new speaker should use her influence to push impeachment proceedings against President Bush.
Well Kevin, there are many that would agree with you, but it ain't gonna happen. Why? Let me give it to you in two words. Are you ready for this? The two words are "Dick Cheney". There is no way under the sun that the Democrats would want Dick Cheney as President and if Bush were impeached and found guilty by the Senate, then Cheney would be the President and he would more than likely select another nut for his Vice President. From what I can tell from the polls, most Americans have had it with that bunch.
Of course a President can be impeached without being found guilty and removed from office but I am not too sure the country is ready for another impeachment. The Republicans in the house impeached Clinton, not so much because of what he did, but because they had the votes and could do it. Are the Democrats above that?
There have been other times in history when Presidents lied to us. Eisenhower lied to us about spy planes flying over the Soviet Union. Perhaps that could be forgiven as he was trying to protect this country. Johnson lied about the war in Vietnam. Nixon lied about the war in Vietnam, Watergate and God only knows what else. Reagan first lied about trading arms for hostages but then later came clean. But he did trade arms for hostages and that was against the law. Clinton lied about his sex life as most men would do, and now Bush has lied to get us in a war and continues to mislead us as to what is going on in Iraq.
I know the Democrats could have impeached Ronald Reagan and they had the votes in the Senate to remove him from office. Tip O'Neil, Democrat Speaker of the House did not want to impeach as he felt it would not be good for the country.
Republicans did not seem to be very concerned about the country when they impeached President Clinton. Impeaching a President because he lied about having sex is a lot different than lying and sending American men and women into harms way.
But I think when you look at the big picture, impeachment should only be carried out in extreme conditions. Oh. You say the war in Iraq is an extreme condition? Time to think.
What do you think?
