Kevin Could be Right
Jon London
A few days ago Mr.Morgan wrote an article about a letter he sent to the Speaker elect. I wrote a comment in this blog concerning that letter. Kevin in turn wrote a rebuttal to my article and now here I come again with a rebuttal to his. Life goes on.
Mr. Morgan makes some excellent points in his rebuttal to my comments concerning the possible impeachment of President Bush. I must say I would have to agree with a number of those points but I still say, if the House impeaches, the Senate will not remove. It takes 2/3rd of the votes in the Senate to remove from office and I can not see that happening. It could very well be that the President will continue to miss things up to the point where the Democratic Congress will have to pull the plug but I don't think we are there yet.
Let's see. Just what could the Congress look at for reasons to impeach the President? As Kevin pointed out, the major charge would be lying to American citizens and getting us into the Iraq War. The President would say he was told by intelligence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and the prosecutors would argue that he helped frame that intelligence. Yes Kevin, that would be an interesting debate. But the President has had pretty good success tying in Iraq with the 9/11 terrorist attacks and many people still think his policies are keeping us safe. We know Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks but you would not know that to hear the President and Vice President tell it. I think the debate about the war would be about keeping America Safe and if we were not over there, they would be over here. I don't agree with that, but I think that would be the debate.
As for the Vice President. I believe Congress could impeach both of them at the same time but I think their trials in the Senate would be separate. No matter how you slice it they would figure out a way to make sure their party stayed in power. After all, they have the votes on the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court put them in office and my guess is they could figure out a way to keep them there.
But the War in Iraq and lying to get us into that war is only the tip of the iceberg. What about illegal wiretaps, or violation of International Law, torturing prisoners, neglect of duty in response to Hurricane Katrina, prisoners held without formal charges, and general contempt towards the Constitution.
Yes Kevin . You are correct in that it would make quite a show and sure would inform the American public. Presidents have too much power and what we have had has been about as close to a Dictatorship as we can come under our Constitution. The Republicans have owned the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court. You can't get much more than that. But the voters finally got around to saying enough is enough. Perhaps we will see things change during the next two years.
If Congress does decide to bring Articles of Impeachment against the President and Vice President, make sure you let me know. It might make me think that our Constitution is still alive. Time to think.
What do you think?
