Mission Still Accomplished
Kevin Morgan

The truth is that Bush's mission was accomplished. The problem is that we were under the impression he was referring to the war. Instead, he was talking about getting control of Iraq's oil. That mission was accomplished the day we became the military presence in Iraq. As long as we are there, the oil is going to be sold through Exxon and associates, all equipment infrastructure supplied through Haliburton, and all sales exchanged in US dollars.

At $3.50 a gallon, this might sound like good news except that paying $3.50 a gallon is another Bush accomplishment for the benefit of Big Oil. Bush pushed doing nothing about global warming eight years further down the road, maintained out-of-control no-goal consumption of oil and thwarted environmental regulations that in turn profited Big Oil.

Picture Voting
Jon London

As long as I can remember, elected officials, members of the media and just about everyone else has said to me."Make sure you vote." Those in charge of voting have had a number of places for a person to register. Number of polling places. All kinds of machines and ways in which to vote easier. But now we have a ruling of the United States Supreme Court that may very well make it harder for some of our citizens in exercise their right to vote.

Of course you know what I am talking about. The highest court in our land has said that the Indiana law stating that you must have a state issued identification card with your picture on it is Constitutional. That Indiana law is very much like the law that is on the books or about to be put on the books in a number of states.

Policy on women in combat bears no relation to reality
In print, the Pentagon's policy on women in combat looks like this: Women shall be excluded from assignment to most units "whose primary mission" is "direct combat on the ground."

On the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan , the Pentagon's policy on women in combat looks like this: Women risk their lives as truck drivers, mechanics and medics attached to combat units. At checkpoints, they do a job that men can't: search Iraqi women . They fire rifles and lob grenades. And when they are struck by the IED blasts and suicide bombers that characterize this war, they are wounded or killed just as surely as their fellow soldiers.

The Myth of Voter Fraud
New York Times Editorial
Missouri and at least 19 other states are considering passing laws that would force people to prove their citizenship before they can vote. These bills are not a sincere effort to prevent noncitizens from voting; that is a made-up problem. The real aim is to reduce turnout by eligible voters. Republicans seem to think that laws of this kind will help them win elections, but burdensome rules like these - and others cropping up around the country - pose a serious threat to democracy and should be stopped.
